Man in Puppy Costume Charged with Strangulation of Juvenile in Clearwater

According to a detailed affidavit from the Clearwater Police Department, the incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Friday, September 1st. Rodney Platthy was outside Sunshine Puppies, a business known for its animal sales, where he was employed to attract customers. He was wearing a large, inflatable puppy costume. The report indicates that Platthy and the store's owner were present when a group of juveniles on bicycles rode by.

Investigators allege that Platthy, who had a history of disputes with this group, "waved the juveniles over to him." As the store owner attempted to de-escalate the situation, one of the juveniles tried to leave. The owner, according to police, grabbed the bike's handlebars to "prevent a collision with himself." It was at this moment that Platthy, from behind, allegedly placed the victim in a chokehold.
